Former President Bill Clinton appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday night and was put on the spot about a particular rumor surrounding the 2016 presidential race.

Some believe that Trump’s candidacy was orchestrated by the Clintons to divide the Republican party and grease the wheels for a Hillary victory.

“There’s a rumor out there and feel free to dispel this,” Colber said. “Did you call Donald Trump and ask him to run for president of the United States?”

Clinton couldn’t help but smile.

“No,” he said. “No.”

Colbert said it would be a pretty smart move.

“Yeah,” Clinton said. “Yeah, I get credit for doing a lot of things I didn’t do, like that.”

Clinton went on to explain what happened.

“His daughter told my daughter that he had tried to call me and I didn’t get the message,” he said. “I simply called him back. I don’t know if he ever intended to discuss this with me or not.

Clinton said he did eventually hook up with Trump.

“I had a great conversation with him and it wasn’t about running for office,” Clinton said.

During the interview, Clinton also said Trump is doing so well in the polls because he’s a “master brander” and “the most interesting character out there.”
